Wow this new site is long overdue. Previously I had my portfolio setup on Virb with a slideshow of my best designs and photos within a custom Virb theme. Virb is an easy to use service but just didn’t fit fully fit my needs. After I had some ideas to redesign the stale Virb theme, I later found out that what I had in mind just wouldn’t work due to the way Virb was created.
So I worked with by best friend and amazing designer/photographer Bryan Carter to help me with html and php to create a new site that I was more proud of. We built the new site on WordPress with a theme called DeepFocus. The theme was really dynamic and fit my style. It’s pretty nice right? Well we learned the hard way that it’s not as easy as just installing a theme and it work like you expect. DeepFocus is geared more for a photographer. Since print designs are usually created in various dimensions, they just didn’t display right. So we then had to rewrite some of the code to make the designs display correctly, it was a bit of pain. Also the theme creator has quite a different way of organizing the code than Bryan does, so it was difficult to locate includes, divs, etc. It was a bit of a headache to say the least. This has been a huge learning learning experience about how php behaves. We have spent several days to retool this theme to fit my needs. Bryan’s famous quote for this project is “I never had issues my own stuff, just yours.” Without Bryan’s tireless help I would not have this very well designed portfolio/blog site. Thank you very much, you are the man.
